We’re a Bible-based, Christ-centered church in the heart of South Gate, California. For over 85 years, we’ve existed for one reason: to glorify God by following His Word, loving one another deeply, and sharing the hope of the Gospel with our community.

We believe that church is more than a place you go — it’s a family you belong to. Whether you’ve been a Christian for decades or you’re just beginning to ask spiritual questions, there’s room for you here.

Our Mission

To glorify God by faithfully teaching His Word, equipping disciples, and sharing the love of Christ with the world.

Our Beliefs

We hold to the authority of Scripture as our only guide in all matters of faith and life. As part of the Churches of Christ, we seek to restore New Testament Christianity in our worship, teaching, and daily living. Here are a few core convictions:

  • The Bible is the inspired Word of God — our final authority in doctrine and practice.

  • Jesus Christ is the Son of God — our Savior, Redeemer, and example.

  • Baptism by immersion is a response of obedient faith (Acts 2:38).

  • The Lord’s Supper is observed weekly in remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice.

  • Worship is simple and heartfelt, centered on congregational singing, prayer, Scripture, giving, and the preaching of the Word.

  • The church is the body of Christ, made up of believers committed to mutual love, service, and growth.

Our Roots in South Gate

In 1939, four families came together with a simple but powerful goal: to follow Jesus faithfully and build a spiritual home in their community. They held their first worship service in a market building on Liberty Boulevard.

Over the decades, the church grew — not just in size, but in love, unity, and outreach. In 1947, the congregation built a youth center with their own hands, a physical reminder of what can be done when God’s people labor together. Through every season, South Gate Church of Christ has remained a beacon of light and truth, committed to Scripture and open to all.

Today, we continue that legacy. Same foundation. Same mission. Still growing.

    Peter Mayfield has been a member of the South Gate Church of Christ since August 29th, 1976. He is married to his wife, Teresa, has six children and twelve grandchildren. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Science and loves to teach, study, write, and play music, among other hobbies.
